The story Acquisition of Sudarshan Chakra by Vishnu Bhagwan – Shiva Purana
In the chapter 34 in Section 4 of Kotirudra-saṃhita of Shiva Purana, the story of acquisition of Sudarshan Chakra by Vishnu Bhagwan is mentioned. On a certain occasion the Daityas became very powerful. They harassed the worlds and violated sacred rites. Tormented by the Daityas, the gods narrated their misery to Vishnu, their saviour. On hearing the plight of the gods, Vishnu remembered the lotus-like feet of Shiva and said: - “O gods, I shall carry out your task after propitiating Shiva. These powerful enemies shall be conquered with great effort.” For the victory of the gods, Vishnu worshipped Shiva, the lord of all the gods, the imperishable and the cosmic witness of all. He went to Kailash and dug a pit there wherein he kindled fire and performed penance with various mantras and hymns prescribed for the worship of earthen image. When Shiva was not pleased with Vishnu, the latter began to think anxiously. Surprised much at this, Vishnu, endowed with great devotion, eulogised lord Shiva by reciting his thousand names with pleasure. Repeating every name, he worshipped Shiva, favourably disposed towards those who seek refuge in him? with a lotus flower. On hearing the eulogy made by Vishnu consisting of the hymn of his thousand divine names lord Shiva became delighted. In order to test Vishnu, Shiva, the lord of the worlds concealed one of the lotus-flowers. There was a shortage of one lotus-flower from among the thousand lotuses. Hence Vishnu was distressed in the course of his worship of Shiva. He thought within himself “Where could the lotus-flower have gone? If it has gone, let it go for good. Is not my own eye a lotus? After thinking thus, he plucked out his eye and repeated the last name Sarvasattvavalambana. Full of emotion he worshipped and eulogised Shiva. On seeing Vishnu in that attitude, Lord Shiva descended from the pedestal of that earthern phallic image installed by Vishnu. Looking mercifully at Vishnu, who Stood before him with palms joined in reverence, the delighted lord Shiva laughingly said then. Shiva said: -- “Vishnu, all the desires in your mind, particularly the task of the gods have been understood by me. Indeed, you are engaged in the task of the gods. For the achievement of the task of the gods and for the destruction of the Daityas without strain, I Shall give the auspicious discus Sudarshan to you. If this discus, this form and this hymn of thousand names is remembered in the battlefield it will quell the misery of the gods. After saying this, the lord gave the discus of the brilliance of ten thousand suns, born of his own feet and destructive of all enemies, to Vishnu. On hearing the words of Shiva, Vishnu was pleased in his mind. Extremely delighted he spoke to Shiva with palms joined in reverence. Vishnu said: -- “What is there to be mentioned to you? You are the immanent soul. Still, O Lord, I mention the same with due deference to your behest. O Sadashiv, the entire universe is afflicted by the Daityas. We have no pleasure at all. Our weapons are in-effectual in killing the Daityas. What shall I do? Where shall I go? I have no greater saviour than you. O lord, I seek refuge in you.” After saying this he stood in affliction and bowed to Shiva, the supreme soul. On hearing these words of Vishnu, Shiva, the lord of gods, gave him his discus Sudarshan shining with the mass of splendour. On receiving it Vishnu slew the powerful demons immediately with the discus without any strain. Thereupon the universe derived normalcy, the gods became happy. After receiving the Sudarshan missile Vishnu was greatly delighted.
