Krishna Janamashtmi – Birthday of Shree Krishna

When Celebrated –
Krishna Janamashtmi or Gokulashtmi is celebrated on eighth day of Shravan (July – August) during monsoon.

Why Celebrated - Significance
Birthday of Shree Krishna is celebrated as Krishna Janamashtmi, who is eighth incarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu. It is believed to be born around 5000 years ago in Mathura.
 
How & Where Celebrated

  1. On Janmashtami, Temples are illuminated and decorated with lights; display of Ras leela & incidents of bravery of Shree Krishna. His idol is placed within cradle. Prasad – fruits, kheer, puri and potato chips are distributed. Shree Krishna artis are performed. 
  2. As per tradition, people sing devotional songs through midnight, offer prayers and keep a fast on the day. 
  3. It is celebrated particularly in Mathura and Brindavan, along with major Vaishnava communities found in Manipur, Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and other regions.
  4. In Maharashtra, on next day of Janamashtmi, Dahi Handi is celebrated. In Dahi Handi, groups of youths (Youths and groups are called as Govindas and Mandals respectively) form human pyramids and try to break pots of butter tied very high. Buckets of water are thrown at them to foil their attempts.

    Shree Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in a prison at Mathura. King Kans, the brother of Devaki had imprisoned them because it was predicted that eighth child of Devaki would kill him. Vasudeva took him to Gokul by crossing Yamuna on a stormy night. Shree Krishna grew up in the care of Yashoda and Nand.
