Tulsi, also called Holy Basil, is a sacred plant in Hinduism. Its full name is Vrinda or Tulasi Devi, and she is considered a goddess and consort of Lord Vishnu. The plant is commonly grown in courtyards and temples and worshipped daily in Hindu homes.

Why Is Tulsi Worshipped?
  1. Divine Connection - Tulsi is believed to be the earthly form of Goddess Lakshmi and a beloved of Lord Vishnu. Worshipping Tulsi is equivalent to worshipping Vishnu.
  2. Spiritual Significance - It is said that no puja (worship) is complete without a Tulsi leaf offered to God, especially to Vishnu or Krishna. Tulsi is believed to destroy sins and grant moksha (liberation).
  3. Purity and Positivity - Tulsi purifies the home and brings peace, prosperity, and health. It is said to ward off negative energies and evil spirits.
  4. Mythological Belief - According to legend, Tulsi was a devoted woman named Vrinda, cursed and transformed into a plant. Lord Vishnu gave her a divine place in His heart.
  5. Medicinal Value- Tulsi is known as the “Queen of Herbs” in Ayurveda. It boosts immunity, cures cough, cold, and respiratory problems, and purifies the blood.

How Is Tulsi Worshipped?
  1. Daily Puja - Water the plant in the morning. Offer kumkum (vermilion), flowers, incense, and diya. Circumambulate (go around) the plant 3 or 7 times, chanting mantras.
  2. Tulsi Vivah (Sacred Marriage) - Celebrated in Kartik month (Oct–Nov). A symbolic marriage between Tulsi and Lord Vishnu (or Shaligram). Marks the beginning of the Hindu wedding season.
  3. Special Days - Ekadashi and Kartika month are especially auspicious for Tulsi worship. Many families avoid plucking Tulsi leaves on Sundays and full moon days.
  4. Mantras for Tulsi Worship - "Tulasi amritajanmasi sada tvam keshavapriya  Patranam darshanam punyam sparshanam paapanaashanam ||" (Meaning: O Tulsi, born from nectar, you are dear to Lord Vishnu. Seeing you, touching you, and worshipping your leaves removes sins.)
