Human Body – the Cosmos & the Temple of Hindu Deities

The central concept of the Yogic and Tantric philosophy is "Yatha Pinde, Tatha Brahmande"—as is the individual body (microcosm), so is the universe (macrocosm). The human body is not just biological; it is a spiritual map or a "living temple" where the entire cosmos is reflected. In the Antahkarana, your physical body is the gross manifestation of the supreme energy.

A person who knows this "Prana-Vidya" no longer feels lonely or small. How can you be "small" when the Himalayas are in your spine and the Sun and Moon are in your nostrils? Your "bundle of worries" is just a tiny cloud in the vast sky of your internal universe.

In Hindu Tantric tradition (specifically the Shat-Chakra-Nirupana), each chakra is a "Throne" where a specific Mantra, an Element, a Presiding Deity (representing the masculine principle), and a Shakti (representing the feminine energy) reside.
To activate these internal gods, we use the Bija Mantras (Seed Sounds) which act as the "vibrational key" to their respective chambers.
If the whole world and all the Gods are inside you, then:
  1. Pilgrimage: You don't need to travel far; deep meditation (Dhyana) is the ultimate pilgrimage to the inner Kashi or Kailash.
  2. Self-Respect: Your body is a temple (Deho Devalaya Proktah). Treating it with "Impure Ego" (body-obsession) is an insult to the Gods within, but treating it with "Pure Ego" (as a vessel for God) is true worship.
  3. The "Bundle of Worries": When you realize that the Sun, Moon, and Shiva himself are functioning within you, the "personal" worries of the small ego seem insignificant. You are a cosmic being.
To activate the cosmic map within you—the Jyotirlingas, Shakti Peethas, and the Elements—the primary tool is Prana-Vidya (The Science of Life-Force). This is the bridge between your physical "bundle of worries" and your divine "Internal Ayodhya."
In the Antahkarana, Prana is the electricity that runs the software of the Mind and the hardware of the Body.
If you want to start feeling the "Gods within" and drop the "bundle of worries," use the Soham (I am That) technique:
  1. Inhale (So): Imagine the energy rising from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Feel the "Shakti" rising to meet "Shiva."
  2. Exhale (Ham): Imagine the grace descending from the crown back to the heart.
  3. The Logic: "So" is the breath of the Universe; "Ham" is the ego dissolving. Eventually, you realize there is no difference between the "I" and the "Divine."
  4. Composition of External Universe and the living body - The Five Elements (Pancha Mahabhuta)
The external universe is composed of five elements, which are represented in the body’s energy centers (Chakras):
  • Earth (Prithvi): Muladhara Chakra (Base of spine) – Represents stability and the physical structure (bones/flesh).
  • Water (Jalas): Svadhishthana Chakra (Sacrum) – Represents fluidity and the emotional/circulatory systems.
  • Fire (Agni): Manipura Chakra (Navel) – Represents digestion, metabolism, and willpower.
  • Air (Vayu): Anahata Chakra (Heart) – Represents the breath and the expansive nature of love.
  • Ether (Akasha): Vishuddha Chakra (Throat) – Represents space, sound, and communication.
  • The Three Primary Nadis (The Inner Rivers)
Just as the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati meet at Prayagraj, your body has three main energy channels that must be balanced to experience the "Gods within":
  • Ida (Moon/Chandra): Left nostril. It controls the Mind, emotions, and cooling energy. It is the "Internal Soma."
  • Pingala (Sun/Surya): Right nostril. It controls the Body, logic, and heating energy. It is the "Internal Agni."
  • Sushumna (The Path of Light): The central channel in the spine. When Ida and Pingala are balanced, Prana enters here, and you move from Deha-Buddhi (Body-consciousness) to Atma-Jnana (Self-knowledge).

  1. The 12 Jyotirlingas in the Body
In Yogic philosophy and the Shiva Purana, the 12 Jyotirlingas (Radiant Lingas of Light) are not just geographical locations in India; they are "Energy Stations" within the human body. By meditating on these internal points, a practitioner can activate the Shiva-Tattva (the element of pure consciousness) within their own nervous system.
The spine is viewed as the Meru Danda (the cosmic axis), and the Jyotirlingas are mapped along its length and within the brain.
  • The Foundation of Energy: Rameshwaram (Muladhara)
Just as Rama established the Linga at the southern tip of India before crossing the ocean, the Rameshwaram energy in your body sits at the base of the spine. It is the "Bridge Builder" that allows your consciousness to cross the ocean of the world (Samsara).
  • The Fire of Health: Vaidyanath & Trimbakeshwar (Manipura)
Located in the digestive and solar plexus region, these energies act as the internal alchemist. Vaidyanath is the "Lord of Physicians." When you focus on this area during deep breathing, you activate the body's natural healing intelligence and regulates metabolism and will-power.
  • The Heart of Sound: Omkareshwar (Anahata)
At the heart center, Shiva exists as Omkareshwar. This is where the individual "I" meets the universal "OM." It is the seat of unconditional love and the rhythm of the heartbeat. By holding the breath gently (Kumbhaka), you awaken the "Nageshwar" and "Vaidyanath," healing the emotional "bundle of worries."
  • The Conqueror of Time: Mahakaleshwar (Throat)
Mahakal (Great Time) resides in the throat. This is where the "Poison" of life is held (like Neelkanth). Activating this center helps the seeker transcend the fear of death and the limitations of time.
  • The Light of Liberation: Kashi Vishwanath (Third Eye)
Kashi (Varanasi) is known as the "City of Light." Internally, Vishwanath is the "Lord of the Universe" who resides in the space between your eyebrows. This is the point where the ego is sacrificed to gain the vision of the Infinite. It ignites the light of pure intuition.
  • The Top of the Head (Somnath): The nectar of pure consciousness.
  • The 51 Shakti Peethas (The Goddess Energy)
According to the Tantra Chudamani, when Sati's body was divided, it fell in 51 places. These represent the 51 letters of the Sanskrit Alphabet (Varnamala) and are localized in the Nadis (energy channels) of the human body. The total lotus petals at seven chakras are 51 which represent 51 shaktipeeth. The 51 letters are the "seeds" of the world. By purifying these sounds within your breath, you literally re-write the "code" of your destiny.
  • The Crown (Sahasrara): Represents the spot where the supreme Maha shakti resides.
  • The Tongue: Represents Tara or Saraswati.
  • The Heart: Represents Kamakhya (The seat of desire and creation).
  • The Eyes: Represent Vimala or Kamakshi.
  • The 7 Major Chakras and Their Deities
Hindu Gods and Goddesses represented the psychological and spiritual qualities of each chakra.
  • Muladhara: The Root of Stability - Deity: Lord Ganesha and Brahma.
He sits here to remove the obstacles of your physical existence. This is where the Kundalini Shakti (the dormant divine energy) lies coiled. Ganesha provides the "Gravity" and security to start the spiritual journey.

  • Svadhishthana: The Flow of Creation - Deity: Lord Vishnu & Goddess Rakini. (In some texts, Brahma).
Vishnu represents the preservation of the life-force. This center governs the sub-conscious mind and procreation. Vishnu ensures the "Rasa" (flavor/joy) of life is maintained.

  • Manipura: The Fire of Transformation - Deity: Lord Rudra & Goddess Lakini.
He is the "Howler" who destroys impurities. It is located at the navel, this is your power center. Rudra uses the "Fire" to digest both food and the "Bundle of Worries," transforming them into raw energy.

  • Anahata: The Palace of Peace – the place of Selfless Love - Deity: Lord Isha / Shiva & Lord Hanuman
A gentle, radiant form of Shiva and Lord Hanuman, who symbolizes selfless devotion and love. This is where the individual soul (Jivatman) resides. It is the "Unstruck Sound"—the place where you find love that requires no external object.
  • Vishuddha: The Space of Purity and Communication - Deity: Lord Sadashiva and the goddess Saraswati.
The "Eternal Shiva" who is always auspicious. Here, the five elements are purified. Sadashiva represents the transition from the material to the purely spiritual.

  • Ajna: The Command Center. Seat of intuition and spiritual insight - Deity: Ardhanarishvara. The union of Shiva and Shakti (Male and Female). This represents the end of duality (Good/Bad, I/You). It is the seat of the Inner Guru. When this deity is active, you see the world "as it is," not as your "worries" project it.

  • Sahasrara: The Supreme Union - Deity: Parama-Shiva.
This is not a chakra but the "Ocean" where all rivers (Chakras) end. Here, there is no more "I"—only the "Pure Awareness."
  1. The Pantheon of Gods within
The Upanishads and Puranas describe the "Devatas" presiding over our sensory organs (Indriyas):
  • Surya (Sun): Resides in the Eyes (The power of sight).
  • Chandra (Moon): Resides in the Mind (Manas - Emotional fluctuations).
  • Indra: Resides in the Hands (The power of action).
  • Vishnu: Resides in the Feet (The power of progression).
  • Agni (Fire): Resides in the Speech (The power of expression).
  • Ashwini Kumaras: Reside in the Nose (The power of smell/vitality).
