Navaratri means nine days. Nine days celebrations are done in Durga Puja and in Ramlila. The name is more synonymous to Durga Puja. The Durga Puja is celebrated mostly twice times a year after harvest season in many states.

The temples are decorated and illuminated during the period. Special puja, havan, arti and kirtans are done. During Durga puja there are performances of music, dance and plays, making the a cultural event.
The festival is an old tradition of Hinduism, though it is unclear how and in which century the festival began. Surviving manuscripts from the 14th century provide guidelines for Durga puja, while historical records suggest royalty and wealthy families were sponsoring major Durga Puja public festivities since at least the 16th century.
